The Princess and the Goblin
by George MacDonald
Princess Irene lived in a large house on the side of a mountain.
She was a very little princess, and she had never seen a goblin.
One day, when she was wandering about the house, she found a
staircase which she had never noticed before. She climbed higher and
higher until she came to a beautiful room at the top of a tower. Inside sat
a lovely old woman, dressed all in white.
“Who are you?” asked the princess.
“I am your great-great-grandmother,” said the lady kindly.
The princess looked at her with wonder. “I did not know I had a
great-great-grandmother,” she said.
“Most people do not know all their family,” answered the old
woman with a smile.
The old lady took Irene’s hand and showed her many wonderful
things in the room. The little princess felt very happy, although she could
not understand how she had never found the place before.
